This is a selection made by Yair López as part of the show at Los Pinos (CDMX) as part of PECDA (Programa de Estímulos a la Creación y al Desarrollo Artístico).

This work is the result of research conducted by Yair López during the year 2009.

The ocean waves break just a few meters from the boardwalk and, on special occasions, crash onto it. Vendors selling tuba, balloons, and corn are always present. Sonic residues spill out from bars and restaurants, intersecting with timeshare promoters, while the “owners of the air” — the Voladores de Papantla — defy death through their ritual. Traditional street vending and performance are an essential part of the boardwalk’s nighttime activity, which behaves like a chameleon, transforming as sunlight fades and day turns into night. Different layers of sound overlap, complement one another, and diverge.

If everything can be described through words, then sounds, too, allow us to read and reread the everydayness of daily wonder. Yair López is a chronicler who describes the world both outside and within, far and near: a traffic jam, a jima, a café conversation, gunpowder, tacos, or a mariachi-filled celebration beyond the city’s limits. At times, he listens to the city within the countryside; at others, he is immobilized by the countryside in the middle of the city.
